OVERVIEW

The Access to H.E. programmes are designed specifically for adults who may not have the conventional educational requirements, such as A level qualifications, but would like an opportunity to enter on to a higher education course. The aim of the course is to enable you to acquire the skills, knowledge and confidence to start a degree programme of your choice in order to help you to fulfil your chosen career potential.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

This diploma is suitable if you are considering a degree requiring a foundation in science. As well as developing essential study skills in preparation for university study, you will complete modules in anatomy and physiology, nutrition and biochemistry.

This programme is also very popular for entry into Nursing, Midwifery, Paramedic Science and other science related degrees.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

Our Access programmes are yearlong daytime courses that aim to give mature students the opportunity to prepare for an undergraduate Honours Degree. The Access course is designed specifically for people who may not have the conventional educational requirements to enter on to a higher education course.

The programme starts in September and finishes in May. 

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

Class tutors will use a variety of assessment methods: portfolio, presentations and online tests.

Successful completion 

In order to achieve the Access to Higher Education Diploma, you must achieve 60 credits; 45 at level three and 15 at level two or three. The grades available will be Pass, Merit and Distinction.

TEACHING CONTACT HOURS

Classes will be taught Monday - Thursday, followed by a 1 hour tutorial. Attendance for the tutorial is optional, but strongly recommended.

Lesson: 09.30 - 11.30

Lunch: 11.30 - 12.00

Lesson: 12.00 - 13.30

Entry Requirements

Formal qualifications are not mandatory, instead a Numeracy and Literacy assessment will be needed. An interview will also be required so that our tutors are satisfied that you can benefit from the course and be able to cope with the future requirements of studying in higher education.

All students wishing to gain entry onto the access course should have a level 2 English equivalent certificate at the time of starting the course or should be willing to get one within the access academic year you have joined.

FEES AND FUNDING

If you're applying for this course and you're over the age of 19 you can apply for funding through Student Finance England via the Advanced Learner Loan (formally the 24+ Advanced Learners Loan).

DURATION AND DELIVERY

This course is delivered over the course of one year. There are two separate intakes for Access to HE Courses. This will be a September intake and a January intake.

WHAT ARE THE FACILITIES?

We have invested £15 million in new, state-of-the-art facilities that will equip students with everything they need to succeed in their studies. CU Scarborough is a fantastic example of an education facility built to meet the needs of students, arranged around an open central atrium, featuring IT suites and lots of individual, group and silent study spaces. Our library stocks essential and recommended readings and over 115,000 eBooks. We have spaces for all the services you need, including careers guidance, student support, a café, prayer rooms and social areas.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

CU Scarborough (CUS) has been established as a new campus in North Yorkshire. It will operate through one of Coventry University’s wholly-owned subsidiaries (Coventry University College Ltd.) and is being supported by the wider Coventry University infrastructure.

CUC Ltd. provide High Quality level 3 Access courses only. Students are responsible for making their own arrangements regarding any level 2 Maths and English qualifications they might need for their progression after this course.
