Higher and Degree Apprenticeships

Coventry University: The Nationwide Apprenticeship University, part of the wider Coventry University Group, works with employers to provide training and assessment for Higher and Degree Apprenticeships (Level 4 and above). Apprentices gain Higher or Degree level academic qualifications awarded by Coventry University as well as professional qualifications such as Chartered Manager status (for Chartered Manager Degree Apprentices).

What is an Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are government funded work-based training programmes. They combine on the job training with nationally recognised qualifications. Apprentices are paid a wage by their employer, and must be allowed to spend 20% of their working hours on learning.

Higher and Degree Apprentices must be over 18. There is no upper age limit.

Graduates can become Higher and Degree Apprentices, as long as the apprenticeship is in a different discipline to the graduate’s existing higher level qualification.

How can I employ a Higher or Degree Apprentice?

It is the employer who recruits the apprentice, although Coventry University: The Nationwide Apprenticeship University can help with recruitment.

We provide training and assessment at one of our campuses, in the workplace or a mixture of both. We also provide one-to-one coaching, distance learning and self-directed study. Learning and assignments are tailored to the employers’ individual business needs, providing return on investment from the beginning of the apprenticeship as apprentices bring new skills and knowledge to their work.

If you pay the apprenticeship levy, you can invest it in training and assessment of apprentices, with 90% government co-funding for any shortfall up to the maximum amount allowed for the apprenticeship.

In the November 2016 DfE Apprenticeship Core Brief:

  • 76% of employers say that productivity has improved.
  • Apprenticeships boost productivity to businesses by on average £214 per week.
  • 75% of employers reported that apprenticeships improved the quality of their product or service.
