Students have been given their first insight into the new Coventry University Scarborough Campus as a major recruitment drive for the initial intake this September gets underway.
Visitors to the town centre had the chance to meet academic and professional staff during the first open day event held since Coventry University, the country’s leading modern university, announced plans to invest in excess of £12 million in a brand new university campus for Scarborough.
Applications through UCAS are now being taken for enrolment this September with courses to be delivered at landmark venues in the town centre ahead of the new purpose-built campus which is planned to open in September 2016.
The courses are designed to meet academic qualifications and professional standards to produce career-ready graduates with the skills to support local economic growth.
Management and leadership, health, childhood development, accounting, law and policing are among the courses offered up to degree level being taught from this September.
Laboratory-based courses such as engineering, biological and chemical sciences, and IT will be added to the curriculum when the state-of-the-art university building planned as part of the £45 million sports and education facility opens on the town’s old Weaponness Park and Ride site.
Professor Craig Gaskell, Provost of Coventry University Scarborough Campus said:
This is a new style of university education coming to Scarborough which is more accessible, flexible and affordable to meet the lifestyle of modern learners.
Students in Scarborough will reap all the benefits of attending a university that is now among the top 15 in the UK. This development will be transformational, securing Scarborough’s status as a genuine University Town for the long-term providing a host of new opportunities for local people.
It will also attract students from throughout the Yorkshire region and beyond and will have a major positive impact on the Yorkshire Coast economy.
Coventry University Scarborough Campus is looking to deliver courses during its first academic year from Scarborough Spa and Scarborough Cricket Club.
Prof Gaskell said:
This is an innovative era in higher education for the region and it will be an exciting opportunity for the first students joining us in September to be part of the history being made.
Coventry University was placed 15th in the Guardian University Guide 2016 published last month, ranking ahead of a number of Russell Group institutions to achieve its highest ever listing and cement its position as the country’s leading modern university.
It is now the highest ranked modern university in all of the major league tables of UK higher education institutions.
