Top Up - Business and Law BA (Hons) Degree

CU Coventry is a new concept in higher education that is designed to integrate study into the life that you lead.

We understand that you have many aspects to your life, but you recognise that gaining higher-level skills and qualifications is really important. That's why we are designing this new way of studying.

Modern business and the legal system are inextricably linked. Lawyers represent commercial interest in both private and public sectors and require a thorough understanding of the mechanics of business structures and operations. This programme will give a thorough grounding in English law and will examine the constraints it imposes and flexibility it allows during practice. It’s particularly suited to individuals aiming for careers in management within the legal arena, where a background in both law and business is pertinent.

  • International Business
  • Business Strategy
  • Commercial Law
  • Intellectual Property Rights

On successful completion of the programme you should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • Leadership concepts and information management – you will explore a range of leadership and management theories including the development, management and exploitation of information systems and their impact upon organisations. You will also look at relevant communication and information technologies for application in business and law;
  • Economics and finance - you will look at the key principles of business economics, by examining the interrelated nature of business, government and the public sector. You will also examine the complexity of the economic environment in which businesses operate and the financial information produced by businesses, specifying how accounting and finance functions support business operations, and identifying sources and methods of financing for businesses and individuals;
  • Law of business organisations - you will look at the workings of business organisations (including formation and effect), their operations and management. You will also examine the practical implications of such entities entering into binding obligations and contracts, the issue of liabilities and protection and the theoretical doctrines and practical applications of English commercial law, drawing where relevant on materials from other jurisdictions;
  • Property Law - you will look at property rights in relation to Land and deal with their definition, development, acquisition and transfer
  • Business strategy and entrepreneurship - you will explore the fundamental aspects of the global business environment that influences business decisions and behaviour. You will also explore the challenges and opportunities involved in the operation of multinational enterprises, the approaches to strategy development, the implications of strategic choices; stakeholder interests and the wider context of strategy and the dynamic and visionary approach to businesses created by entrepreneurs.

This course will be taught through a variety of methods – lectures, tutorials, self-directed learning, textbooks, module webs, scenario-based learning sets, professional libraries and resources, journals and case studies, seminars, discussion forums and peer-to-peer learning.

Assessments will take the form of individual and group coursework, which is vocationally relevant. The wide range of assessment techniques used at CU Coventry will ensure that you have every opportunity to demonstrate your skills and knowledge in full.

There are no traditional final examinations to worry about. Instead, we will assess your learning through course work and phase tests. Assessments take place during and at the end of each six-week block.

As a full-time student a normal learning block will mean that you get 18 hours of teaching each week in groups of approximately 25-50 students. Depending on the course you have chosen, you’ll attend morning (9.00-13.00) or afternoon (14.00-18.00) sessions. You will also need to attend one two-hour tutorial each week.

You can study up to four blocks in one academic year or study at a slower pace (usually three academic blocks per year). Please note if you do study at a slower pace you will need to re-enrol to complete your studies in the next academic year.

For the academic year 2017/18 each block for part-time students will cost £1,502.25. Therefore, the total fee per stage of your qualification if completed in the academic year 2017/18 is: £6,009.

How will this course enhance my career prospects?

With a BA behind you, your chances of employment should be improved, and the level at which you enter the jobs market could mean a higher salary. You could go on to work in a number of different disciplines including studying towards postgraduate qualifications, working within law based industries or any business with a strong focus on law and strategic development. The BA provides you with a strong set of transferable skills valued by employers.

We plan to support you on your journey from student to graduate and hopefully employment by facilitating and encouraging work placements and internships to help you stand out from other graduates.

Sandwich years and placements give you the opportunity to gain further insight into the industry or career you are seeking to follow. This enables you to contextualise the theoretical models and concepts discussed in the classroom in the work place. Furthermore, if you choose to take advantage of a placement or sandwich year this version of the degree will help to increase your employment prospects by acquiring skills and gaining an understanding of what employers expect of graduates.

Modules within the programme include units based on the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) levels 5 Award in Management and Leadership and the CILEx Level 3 and Level 6 Certificate in Contract Law and Civil Litigation. Upon successful completion of these elements you will have the opportunity to complete this professional qualification, should you wish to do so. Adding professional qualifications to your CV should help improve your employability.
