This course aims to provide the skills and knowledge relevant for successful progression onto a degree in health, social work or science. It also sets a foundation for your journey to employment, creating opportunities for professional and academic development.
Academic Skills for Science
This module is aimed at creating a culture of careful learning and self-reflection, where you’ll be encouraged to recognise strengths and weaknesses and take ownership of your development. You’ll be introduced to a range of skills that will aid you throughout the programme and further study, such as time management, scientific language and resource management.
In addition, you gain highly-regarded employment skills such as digital proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint etc.), team management, communication skills, planning and more. We will cover plagiarism, referencing, library skills and professional standard, alongside lectures on ethics, health and safety and technical skills, so that you receive thorough, full-circle training.
Foundations of Anatomy and Physiology
The human body is a complex system performing a multitude of functions every day and like any system it can malfunction for a variety of reasons. You’ll delve into the reasons why, gaining fundamental knowledge of anatomy, physiology and its relationship with health and disease.
This module is underpinned with exciting practical elements, meaning you’ll have the opportunity to undertake activities such as taking measurements of the cardiovascular system and respiratory system, and use non-invasive techniques to investigate responses to variations in body functioning.
Undertaking laboratory based exercises associated with microbiology, this module forms an introduction into cell structures and genetics. You’ll get to explore structural differences between DNA/RNA and critically discuss the effects of genetic mutation and chromosomal disorders. You’ll demonstrate your understanding of structures and functions through laboratory based assessments, meaning you get hands on experience working with industry standard apparatus and environments.
Foundations of Chemistry
In this module you will study the relevant theories and concepts of the appropriate scientific disciplines studied in chemistry. Set in our fully-equipped laboratories, you’ll be introduced to the fundamentals of electronic structure, organic and physical chemistry. You’ll explore properties of chemical substances and specific chemistry sessions such as compounds, alterations, reactions and chemical reactions.
