About Eduroam

eduroam (EDUcation ROAMing) is a world-wide community whose aim is to "open your laptop and be online". Eduroam allows users (researchers, teachers, students, staff) from participating institutions to securely access the Internet from any eduroam-enabled institution. The eduroam principle is based on the fact that the users' authentication is done by the user's home institution, whereas the authorisation decision allowing access to the network resources is done by the visited network. Put simply, a Coventry University user can visit other eduroam institutions and log into their network using their Coventry University username and password.

Eduroam uses 802.1X to authenticate users. To enable authentication at any eduroam site, a world-wide hierarchical infrastructure of authentication servers (RADIUS) exists which securely tunnel users' authentication attempts back to their home institution.

JANET Roaming Service

In the UK, eduroam is operated and provided by the JANET Roaming Service. All UK eduroam sites are members of the JANET Roaming Service and must comply with the JANET Roaming Technical Specification. JANET is the Joint Academic NETwork which provides our gateway to the Internet.

The JANET Roaming Service manages the UK authentication infrastructure which connects to the European eduroam infrastructure.

Using Eduroam

The eduroam wireless network requires the client device to be configured for WPA2 enterprise (PEAP) in much the same way as the PHOENIX-NET-SECURE network.  Find out how to connect to eduroam JRS User Guide

Please Note: Your username is not your e-mail address, even though it contains an @ sign. It is the username you use to log in with followed by @coventry.ac.uk. Entering anything else will result in you being unable to login.

Ensure that you have a working configuration by testing your device with the eduroam wireless network at Coventry before embarking on your visit to another eduroam site. We recommend that you generally only use eduroam when off campus. If you have problems using eduroam at another site you should, in the first instance, contact the IT Services at Coventry University (and not the site you are visiting).

Visiting Other Eduroam sites

A list of participating HEIs can be found on the JANET Roaming web site. You may need check with staff at the site that you will be visiting to find out what Eduroam facilities are available there. In the long term it is hoped that there will be information on the web at each site explaining the services on offer and how they can be used by visitors. Find the latest Operational Status information for many of the Eduroam participants.

Once you are at the remote site you will be prompted for your Eduroam username and password. You should use your normal Coventry username (e.g. aa1234) followed by @coventry.ac.uk and then your normal Active Directory password.

You should follow any local instructions issued by the computing service at the institute that you are visiting regarding security, access restrictions and acceptable use policies including the JANET Roaming Policy. Note that you are also still bound by the Coventry University Code Of Conduct

Once authenticated you should usually have access to at least web browsing. This will allow you to access your Coventry University e-mail via our webmail service. You can also access other web based Coventry University resources. To gain access to the central Coventry University services you should use Connect VPN
