Counselling provides an opportunity for you to talk with a professionally trained individual about any emotional or psychological problems you may be having. The counsellor will not tell you what to do but instead will explore with you the thoughts feelings and behaviours that are causing you difficulties and together you will work out the best way forward.
During your university career there may be times when you need a little extra support: for example when you first arrive at university and have to adjust to a new environment as well as make new friends and cope with your studies; or during periods of academic pressure, or maybe when you are dealing with unexpected life events that impact on your emotional wellbeing. At these times it can be helpful to have additional support to that offered by your friends and family.
We are a team of professionally trained counsellors, male and female, available to work with students all year round, Monday – Friday.

Each year the counselling service offers training placements for students undertaking counselling courses at local institutions. We expect applicants to have had some experience of one-to-one counselling and to have completed the first year of a diploma course. Applications are invited during the academic year, with short listing and interviews taking place in June.
