EndNote

Refworks replaces Endnote

After a review of the reference management software packages currently on the market and consultation with a number of teaching and research colleagues, the decision was taken to end our subscription to Endnote and to subscribe to a alternative reference management product, Refworks. It was felt that Refworks had a number of clear advantages over Endnote, including the following:

  • More user-friendly
  • It is web-based, which means it offers easier access from off-campus.
  • It also has additional functionality in terms of being able to share references between a number of users.

Although the last version of Endnote we have (Endnote XI) is still on the University network, Endnote users are strongly advised to transfer their Endnote references across to Refworks as there is a real possibility that Endnote will drop off the network at some point in the future. Please follow the simple instructions outlined below:

Importing your Endnote references into Refworks

  • Go into Refworks and from the References menu select Import EndNote V8+ Database.
  • Browse for and select your EndNote library (.enl).  Note: Currently there is a 25 MB import limit on the size your EndNote library.
  • Specify a folder to import your records into (optional)
  • Click on Import at the bottom of the Import window. The progress in importing is measured by * for each reference imported. RefWorks will notify you when the import is complete.
  • Your records should automatically appear in the Last Imported folder.

What is EndNote?

EndNote is a piece of software that can help you to:

  • store, organise and manage references collected from lots of different sources;
  • easily create lists of references (or bibliographies) in the correct format for use in your research.

How do I access EndNote?

EndNote is available to all staff and students from any PC on the campus network.

You are not allowed to download the software onto your own PC or laptop (unless you buy a personal licence), but you can access EndNote from home by using the Remote Desktop Connection.
