Welcome to the Department of Economics, Finance and Accounting.
The University has provided economics and business higher education courses since the mid 1960s. As a result of recent re-structuring, the new enlarged 20-member Department of Economics, Finance and Accounting, located in the Faculty of Business, Environment and Society, now offers a range of full-time single and combined honours undergraduate and post-graduate degrees.

Past graduates have secured highly successful and lucrative posts with reputable national and international employers, including governments, in Britain and overseas.
The Department is located in the modern William Morris building, which is fully equipped with the latest teaching technologies. It has in excess of 500 home and international students who come from a variety of different socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds contributing to a diverse, multi-cultural and multi-faith student community.
Staff
The Department has
highly qualified and experienced academic staff who teach on a range of undergraduate and post-graduate courses, supervise PhDs, undertake academic and applied research (especially in the area of financial markets and pedagogy), and publish books and papers in peer-reviewed academic journals.
Some of our staff also participate in nationally funded research projects aimed at improving the quality of teaching provision and student learning experience. Many of the staff members also have professional qualifications which enable them to offer students expert advice on employment careers in different types of economic, financial and accounting professions.
Teaching Methods and Delivery
Teaching methods incorporate a range of delivery modes including formal lectures combined with small seminar and tutorial classes.
The Department has:
- A well developed IT infrastructure with access to the electronic library and financial databases.
- Developed a particular expertise in the delivery of teaching material and enhancing the learning experience through the use of Web Course Tools (CU Online).
- Pioneered a number of online learning modules, including use of EQL. Many of these modules are provided online to the department’s partner institutions and for clients in Europe and Asia including China.
The department’s teaching and learning activities are amply supported by the excellent Lanchester Library which is located next to the William Morris building.
Quality Assurance
- During the last round of Subject Reviews, the Quality Assurance Agency gave this provision an "excellent" rating.
- Our Accounting courses offer professional body exemptions in most foundation level papers.
- Past External Examiner Reports also reaffirm the quality of course provision of the Department.
- Recent student satisfaction surveys also place the Department’s courses in the above average category.
