The Parents' Guide to Clearing

Applying Now

What is Clearing?

On Results Day, we hope your child is ecstatic when they open their envelope (or get their email). However, there’s a chance their results won't be what they were expecting. If they haven’t got the grades they needed, it’s unlikely they'll have an offer.

That’s where Clearing comes in

During Clearing your child will try and find an available course that they can study with their grades. It normally involves your child checking websites, calling up a uni and seeing if they can accept them. It’s a second chance to get into uni.

What can you do?

Results Day and Clearing can be confusing and stressful for students and for you. If your child opens their envelope on Results Day and doesn’t see the grades they were hoping for, remember the ‘three Ps’:

1
Pause

Before you agree with them that the uni dream has died and they’re a complete failure, wait!

Take a second to form your reaction. An encouraging word will help them see the truth of the situation.

2
Don’t Panic

Students are likely to switch straight to panic mode if they haven’t got the results they hoped for.

They’ve been working hard for a long time to reach this stage – they’ve probably been envisaging themselves at their uni of choice all year. They need to see you staying calm if they’re going to.

3
Stay Positive

There’s a myth that Clearing is solely negative, but it's not true. Read stories from our students who benefited from Clearing.

Clearing gives your child space to decide what they want to do, maybe realise there's a subject which suits them better, and perhaps consider universities they hadn’t before.

UnCOVer more

Here are some hints from Sonia, a student who recently came through Clearing:

1
Research

Support your children by making lists of fall-back universities for them to call.

2
Support

Remember that your children are probably more stressed than you are and they need your support with their next steps.

3
Opportunity

Being in Clearing isn't a closed door to universities but a second opportunity to make a decision about the future.
