The course is designed to enable you to develop your ability to teach English as a foreign language, providing a sound theoretical understanding of the processes, methods and materials employed in learning and teaching foreign languages.

During the first year, we examine the theories of learning and second language acquisition (SLA). We focus on learners and their contexts; the reasons people have for learning English and the needs and expectations they bring to the classroom. We’ll consider the roles of teachers, leading into the study of classroom management and standard teaching techniques.

Language awareness is clearly an important consideration, so you’ll have opportunities to develop your own knowledge ‘about’ English to help you teach the language effectively. You will analyse how the learning of the language systems of grammar, lexis and phonology is integrated into the development of learners’ skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. You’ll be introduced to the fundamentals of language and linguistics, along with other English students. This should give you insights into how language works and how people use language when speaking and writing across a wide range of contexts, so that the messages they want to get across have the intended impact.

The Add+vantage modules teach a range of work experience and extra-curricular activities that are taken each year, and broaden students knowledge and skills within a work focused environment. There is a very wide range of Add+vantage free-choice subject areas, and they are arranged in themes.


In your second year, you’ll continue to develop your teaching skills through weekly practice sessions teaching learners of English who attend specially arranged classes at the University. You’ll be taught about adapting published teaching materials to better suit the needs of the learners you are teaching, as well as designing your own materials starting from written and spoken texts available through a range of media.

You’ll have the chance to deepen your knowledge of learning strategies by studying, analysing and reporting on the way people use the English language in real-life situations. For example, one of your TEFL assignments in Year Two is a case study of an individual learner of English – a learner from your teaching practice group. You’ll collect samples of speech and writing and analyse their strengths and weaknesses in order to create a study plan to help your learner continue developing proficiency in English.

Our main study themes are:

  • Teaching English as a foreign language: Explores the principles, teaching methodologies and techniques underlying the teaching of English as a Foreign Language. You’ll observe lessons taught by experienced teachers, as well as gaining your own practical experience in delivering increasingly effective lessons in weekly teaching practice sessions. You will learn to critically evaluate published teaching materials and deepen your understanding of the rationale behind the language and skills practice activities that are presented in TEFL course books.

  • Language and linguistics: The analysis of the nature and structure of English Language, its meaning, form and context, including how words and sentences are formed, how we make and hear sounds, how languages change and vary, and how language is organised in the brain.

  • Stylistics: Analysing style involves looking closely and systematically at the formal features of a text and then considering how those features affect and contribute to the meaning and interpretation of the text in question. We will examine the linguistic models and analytic techniques that can be used to describe, analyse and interpret a range of literary, as well as non-literary, texts.

  • Literary genres: A study of the different genres in the study of literature, such as poetry, drama, prose fiction and film. You will develop an awareness of literary conventions, literary history and how both are related to social and cultural contexts. You’ll gain insights and opinions about different literary genres and be familiar with the analysis and interpretation of poetic, narrative and dramatic texts.

The course normally lasts three years when studied full-time and four to six years part-time. 

Coventry was one of the first UK universities to embed Cambridge teaching qualifications into the second year of study. Students who achieve a result in TEFL above the average grade in their first year, and meet our own criteria, are given the opportunity to study for the Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA). Students who do not achieve the required level can opt for the Cambridge Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT). 

The emphasis of teaching is on language as discourse, an approach that significantly enhances both an awareness of language as an instrument for constructing meaning and also the range of ‘tools’ for teachers, but we also examine different styles of language. For example, in the first year, you will have an assignment about ‘the language of humour’ in which you will analyse comedy from a linguistics perspective. In the past, we’ve taken students to see big name stand-up comedy acts such as Jimmy Carr, Ed Byrne and Marcus Brigstocke to provide material to analyse, which has naturally proved very popular.

Our excellent industry links enable us to host an exciting programme of guest speakers covering topics such as the impact of the Internet and social media on language and how it is used.

Your weekly teaching practice sessions provide an opportunity for members of the local community to improve their English language skills, some come to us through a link we have with Coventry Refugee and Migrant Centre, while others are EU citizens who’ve come to live, work and study in Coventry. You’ll also have the opportunity to go on fieldtrips, for example, to the Language Show Live at London Olympia in October and the Harry Potter Studios in London or a night at the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry catching a play for those interested in creative writing.

Teaching methods include: lectures, with associated seminars and practical workshop classes.

Your work will be marked according to how well you achieve the various learning outcomes, which will be clearly set out on all project briefs. Assessment forms vary and include: examinations, essays, reports, presentations (individual and group), projects and the dissertation.

An estimated percentage breakdown of your final grade assessment is as follows:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of: Descriptions, analyses and theories of the English language and a critical approach to discourse and the construction of meaning; the ways in which the English language is applied in specific circumstances for different audiences and purposes; the social, cultural, psychological and historical contexts in which the language exists, has developed and is used in the study of English Language and Literature; a working knowledge of the principles and methods generally adopted to teach the English language; an understanding of the latest developments in the design of language teaching methods and materials, including the use of ICT.

  • Critically examine and also construct a range of opinions and ideas.
  • Locate and select appropriate information from a variety of sources, referencing academic essays appropriately.

DHLE 2014/15

In a typical teaching week, you will have up to 14 ‘contact’ hours of teaching. This generally breaks down as:

  • Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 1-hour session up to 3 times each semester (as individuals or in small groups), as well as individual project supervision in your final year.
  • Medium group teaching: 8 hours of practical classes, workshops or seminars each week.
  • Large group teaching: 5 hours of lectures each week.

In addition, you will be expected to undertake a further 26 hours of self-directed studying, including guided study using handouts, online activities in your own time.

This course is focused on supporting graduates, development of  the skills to work and teach English all over the world, so the curriculum explores a range of different cultures and contexts through modules such as Languages in the World and Language and Society in Modern Britain.

You will be given opportunities to engage with international students at home and abroad. For example, first year students collaborated online with students from Mexico to discuss shared intercultural interests, create joint assessed digital projects, language exchange and intercultural communicative competence and reflect on their international experience.

We strongly encourage you to broaden your theoretical, cultural and practical references, providing opportunities to broaden your horizons by living, studying or working abroad on a sandwich year. For example, you can study English at Limoges in France or teach English in Malta or China.

There are volunteering opportunities to mentor overseas students in Coventry as ‘English buddies’, and invitations to attend scholarly talks by overseas visitors, which have previously included academics from China, France and Spain. We also offer a range of short visits and field trips abroad, which are reviewed annually. Recent fieldtrips have included a visit to Turkey to meet students who had collaborated with CU students on an online project.

At Coventry University, you can enjoy a whole host of multicultural and multilingual activities, such as the international film club and the French and Spanish conversation clubs. You can learn another language with the university-wide Add+vantage Scheme or the Linguae Mundi programme.

Entry Requirements

University Course Code: BESU073
A Level BTEC IB Diploma GCSE requirement
BBC DDM 30 points 5 GCSEs at grade A*–C including English Language, or specified equivalents. Applicants without A2 English require GCSE English Language or Literature at grade B.


Additional Information: applicants may be invited to attend an interview.


A-Level applicants are required to have three
 A2 Levels. Coventry University may include AS grades within an offer for certain courses, but we are not able to accept two AS Levels in place of one A2 Level. In some courses it may be necessary for entrants to have passed specific A2 Levels in nominated subjects. Please see the course pages for more information.

Access Diplomas

The Access to HE Diploma to include 30 Level 3 credits at Merit. Plus GCSE English Language at grade B.

Coventry University welcomes applicants who have completed, or who are studying, the Access to HE Diploma developed by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA). Successful completion of the course will require you to gain 60 credits with at least 45 to be achieved at Level 3 (with the remainder at Level 2). In some cases we will require you to have gained Merit or Distinction grades in a number of units or in nominated subjects. BTEC Level 3 Diplomas

The University will accept the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma for entry to most courses. In some cases we will require applicants to have studied either certain named modules or a specific named Diploma. The appropriate course page will have full information on the entry requirements. The University also accepts the BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma and BTEC Level 3 Diploma for entry to degree programmes, provided that they are studied in combination with other qualifications that provide a total volume of study that is equivalent to three A2 Levels. For example, you could be studying a BTEC Level 3 Diploma plus an A2 Level, or a BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma plus two A2 Levels. Where a specific A2 or BTEC subject is required for entry then you must be offering this as part of your combination of qualifications.

According to the , there were around 1.7 billion people learning and using English worldwide in 2015, forecast to rise to 2 billion by 2020.

There are hundreds of language schools throughout the UK, as well as opportunities to teach English as a foreign language (TEFL) in places like Japan, China and other East Asian countries, the Middle East, parts of Eastern Europe, Spain, Italy and Germany

On the successful completion of this course, you can start applying immediately to a range of potential employers, including commercial language schools, education and development organisations, government departments, multinational companies, The British Council and a whole host of international volunteer organisations.

Recent graduates of the course have gone on to work for language service providers abroad as well as in the UK, and some have trained as school teachers through PGCE programmes. After some full-time teaching experience, you can go on to take the higher level Diploma in English Language Teaching (DELTA) or an MA course in English Language Teaching.
