Both underpinned by a desire to understand behaviour and solve problems, mathematics and physics have been considered in unity since Galileo first recognised and used the power of mathematics in his study of nature. They have changed the way we view and interact with the world – from enabling us to develop new forms of energy and improving the quality of sound, to developing anti-locking break systems or travel through space.

One of the top 15 universities in the country in the Guardian University Guide 2018, Coventry has a long tradition of teaching mathematics with a strong emphasis on its applications in practical situations. Accredited by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), this course meets the educational requirements towards gaining Chartered Mathematician status, the first of two stages to do so.

Course information

This professionally accredited course explores traditional and modern concepts in the field of mathematical physics, such as cosmology, fluid dynamics, electromagnetism and quantum mechanics.

As well as providing an excellent grounding in theoretical physics, we adopt a practical approach to applied mathematics, helping you to gain experience using important software packages, like MAPLE and MATLAB®. We’ll also provided opportunities for you to develop sophisticated analytical skills, together with the reporting and presentation skills required to communicate arguments and conclusions effectively. You will also study pure and applied mathematics, including areas such as numerical analysis and mechanics.

Overview

Your first year lays the foundation for the study of Mathematics and Physics, including topics such as algebra, calculus, statistics, mechanics, waves and optics.

Throughout your studies, you will have opportunities to participate in a series of skills development sessions to improve your digital literacy, as well as presentation and writing skills, particularly in a mathematical context. We will aim to familiarise you with a range of computational software related to the fields of mathematics and statistics, such as LaTeX, Excel, Matlab, Python, Maple, Minitab, SPSS and R.

During the first year, you will also be given the opportunity to opt in to the scheme to participate in our Secondary Initial Teacher Training programme. As a SCITT trainee you will spend time during your second and third year of your subject degree, teaching and learning alongside expert practitioners. There will be one day a week release from your degree to facilitate this. As a Secondary SCITT accredited trainee you will train in across the 11-16 secondary phase.  You will work with selected partner(s) school within the Coventry SCITT Students who undertake this pathway must decide during their first year of their degree if they wish to opt into the Secondary School Experience pathway. This is followed by a numeracy and literacy test and interview for selection.  Subject to passing the entrance test students will then follow the training pathway as defined in section 13. Those who choose not to participate will follow the normal course structure.

You will also engage in a dissertation project carrying out in-depth investigations in a field that interests you. Our main study themes are:

  • Waves, optics and probability: Develops the necessary theory, methods and concepts of probability distributions and different types of waves. You should develop an understanding of real world applications of physical and geometrical optics and propagation of sound waves, and how these are applied to an understanding of interference and diffraction, dispersion and wave propagation phenomena.
  • Algebra and calculus: We will cover the core mathematical methods with an introduction to abstract algebra, including some number theory. We will examine the theory of real functions and the mathematics underpinning it, together with the calculus of complex functions and how to differentiate and integrate functions of complex numbers.
  • Mathematical and numerical analysis: Provides a rigorous foundation in the analysis of sequences, series and continuous functions, including the Riemann integral and numerical methods for solving partial and ordinary differential equations, which are the most important aspects of modern applied mathematics. You should examine a variety of numerical analysis methods, such as graph theory, and develop basic scientific programming skills to be able to use relevant programming languages, such as Python or Matlab.
  • Mathematical modelling: We will explore means of mathematical modelling, using case studies to illustrate different techniques and then applying them during laboratory sessions. We cover differential equations, including linear and nonlinear systems, qualitative theory, phase space, phase portraits, trajectories and the bifurcation theory for parametrized equations. We also study partial differential equation and the methods to solve them, including separation of variables, method of characteristics, integral transforms, Green’s function etc. We will develop the use of Newtonian mechanics and its use in modelling physical situations, together with a brief introduction to special relativity.

The programme can be studied full-time over three years of study with the option of extending this to four years, by taking a sandwich year in the form of an industrial training placement or study abroad between Year 2 and Year 3.

Throughout the course, great emphasis is placed on practical skills development; some of your time being spent on computer laboratory sessions, which may involve the use of Mathematical software to solve mathematical problems, and we also run examples classes covering things like going over solutions to exercises. 

You will have opportunities to work with staff on real-world problems from industry, commerce and research groups, as you would in professional practice. This means that you will have opportunities to develop professional skills at the same time as you learn the technical content of your degree. In the past, projects have included asymptotic methods, chaotic systems and mathematics education.

We will encourage you to attend employer presentations organised by the University and also run our own sessions, which have previously covered government operational research and included some of our past students talking about their job roles and careers.

The learning outcomes of modules, assignments and projects will be clearly stated. Your work will be marked according to how well you achieve these learning outcomes and your final feedback will refer to each outcome, as well as providing an overall percentage grade. You need to achieve an average of 40% or above to pass each module; marks of 70% or above are classified as ‘First Class’.

An estimated percentage breakdown of your final grade assessment is as follows:

  • Practical work e.g. presentations: 6%

  • The logical construction of a mathematical argument.
  • The application of mathematics to construct models and their resolution, with an appreciation of the validity of the model and the use of approximation.
  • The use a range of analytic and descriptive techniques.
  • The strengths and weaknesses of selected mathematical software and a selected programming or scripting languages and their use to extend capabilities.
  • A range of real-world applications of mathematics.


On successful completion, you should be able to:

  • Understand, reproduce and generalise logical mathematical reasoning.
  • Organise and interpret information and results from mathematical models.
  • Formulate physical theories in mathematical terms, the solution of the resulting equations, either analytically or numerically, and the physical interpretation of the solutions.
  • Use specialist modern information technology packages and a programming language confidently.
  • Use a wide range of information resources to acquire relevant information.

DHLE 2014/15

In a typical teaching week, you will have up to 15-19 ‘contact’ hours of teaching. This generally breaks down as:

  • Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 1 hour of personal academic tutorial each week; 1 hour of individual project supervision (in year 3) per week.
  • Medium group teaching: 6-12 hours of tutorials, laboratories and studio sessions each week.
  • Large group teaching: 6-12 hours of lectures each week.

In addition, you will be expected to undertake a further 20 hours of self-directed study each week eg. guided study using handouts, online activities etc.

If you have a desire to gain international experience, there are opportunities to spend a year studying abroad. In the past, students have chosen to study Mathematics in St Marcus University in California, University of Malta, Stockholm University in Sweden, also universities in the Netherlands, Germany and Australia.  Courses in all these Universities are delivered in English.

Entry Requirements

A Level BTEC IB Diploma GCSE requirement
ABB - BBB to include Mathematics. Excludes General Studies Assessed on an individual basis 31 points to include 5 points from Mathematics at Higher Level 5 GCSEs at grade A*-C including English, Mathematics, or specified equivalents.

A-Levels

A-Level applicants are required to have three
 A2 Levels. Coventry University may include AS grades within an offer but we are not able to accept two AS Levels in place of one A2 Level. In some courses it may be necessary for entrants to have passed specific A2 Levels in nominated subjects. Please see the course pages for more information.

Access Diplomas

The Access to HE Diploma will be assessed on an individual basis.

Coventry University welcomes applicants who have completed, or who are studying, the Access to HE Diploma developed by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA). Successful completion of the course will require you to gain 60 credits with at least 45 to be achieved at Level 3 (with the remainder at Level 2). In some cases we will require you to have gained Merit or Distinction grades in a number of units or in nominated subjects. BTEC Level 3 Diplomas

The University will accept the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma for entry to most courses. In some cases we will require applicants to have studied either certain named modules or a specific named Diploma. The appropriate course page will have full information on the entry requirements. The University also accepts the BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma and BTEC Level 3 Diploma for entry to degree programmes, provided that they are studied in combination with other qualifications that provide a total volume of study that is equivalent to three A2 Levels. For example, you could be studying a BTEC Level 3 Diploma plus an A2 Level, or a BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma plus two A2 Levels. Where a specific A2 or BTEC subject is required for entry then you must be offering this as part of your combination of qualifications.
