Overview

Advising people on their fitness and health is a rewarding career and can be one step closer with an Applied Sport and Exercise Science MSc.

The amount of ill health associated with physical inactivity and the increasing demand for enhanced performance in professional sports has fuelled interest in sports science and raised the demand for sport and exercise science practitioners.

This course aims to provide students with the technical, analytical, practical and professional knowledge, understanding and skills to enhance human performance across a range of domains (sport, occupational, health) using exercise. Your studies will count towards British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES) accreditation.

The course meets the competencies and scope of practice required for accreditation by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES). You will study modules explicitly related to the BASES requirements for accreditation, then, in order to gain BASES accreditation, you must undertake a separate period of ‘supervised experience’ with BASES. Additional costs may apply. Please check with the membership body for details.

Course information

The programme has been mapped against the British Association for Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) accreditation framework, which covers practical ability in laboratory techniques, reflective practice, theoretical basis of the physiology and psychology of sports and exercise.  

As well as subject-specific knowledge, we will encourage a critical, analytical and flexible approach to problem-solving in the area of applied sport and exercise science.  You will have the opportunity to systematically and creatively explore complex issues, such as physical activity, nutrition and obesity, and elite physiological support through a variety of case studies, laboratory sessions and group work.

Our aim is to effectively prepare you for professional employment, so we focus on providing enhanced practical and professional skills through a combination of lectures, laboratory and field sessions and case studies. For example, we consider the effect of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and exercise in extreme conditions.

We aim to share the latest advances at the forefront of applied sport and exercise through our own experiences and guest lectures. You are also required to complete in-depth research study in the area of sport and exercise science, so will receive training in research methods, including data analysis in both research and applied practice.

  • We have experts in sport and exercise psychology, physiology, exercise and health, strength and conditioning, biomechanics, and nutrition, many conducting ongoing research and consultancy.
  • Access to industry-standard software, including those for assessing dietary analysis and energy expenditure and specialist equipment, including fat suits, an environmental chamber and a range of ergometers and metabolic carts.

Guest lecturers have previously covered public health, obesity and sport performance.

Our main study themes are:

  • Exercise Physiology: Exploring physiological adaptations and responses (acute and chronic) as a result of strength training, applied sport and exercise science, examining exercise in different populations, together with use of appropriate physiological assessment techniques.

  • Biomechanics: The biomechanical factors influencing sports performance and associated activities, as well as appropriate biomechanical assessment techniques.

  • Sport and Exercise Psychology: Psychological factors influencing sport and exercise performance, the use of psychological strategies to enhance and/or explain sport and exercise performance.

  • Nutrition: The science of nutrition and the use of dietary strategies to enhance sport and exercise performance. 

  • Research Skills: Key aspects of scientific method will be developed. Types of information, finding appropriate information for scientific purposes, and how to use this information. Experimental design, analysis and presentation of data.

The course can be studied full-time over a year or part-time over two years. 

The course employs a blended learning approach, designed to maximise students’ opportunities to balance study with other commitments. The taught delivery will be over two days per week, Wednesday and Thursday. Your teaching sessions are accompanied by associated online delivery, such as online lectures, online problem-based learning, and discussion boards.

The lecture courses are intended to provide the framework of ideas and subject matter of the syllabus. Tutorials are used for small group discussion and are opportunities both for discussing and overcoming difficulties and for problem-solving exercises undertaken either during or prior to the tutorial period. Tutorials are also used to develop students’ oral communication skills. 

Online problem based learning will be used to allow students to work collaboratively on a series of problem scenarios in order to construct their own understanding of a particular topic/issue. In the past, this has ranged from increasing the levels of physical activity in obese individuals to performance testing of elite cyclists.

Practical work is intended to develop experimental/practical techniques and the ability to make accurate observations and assess errors. This includes performance and fitness testing, body composition assessment and physical activity monitoring.

Teaching methods include: lectures, tutorials, practical laboratory/therapy classes, problem-based learning and directed self-learning.

Senior Lecturer in Sports and Exercise Science

Achievement of learning outcomes in the modules is assessed by a combination of coursework assignments, oral presentations, video presentations, a practical portfolio and a dissertation.
An estimated percentage breakdown of your final grade assessment is as follows:

  • Coursework: 50%
  • Presentation: 40%
  • Practical portfolio: 10%

On the successful completion of 180 level Masters credits, awards may be made with a ‘Distinction’ or ‘Merit’, based on the achievement of an average mark of at least 70% or 60% respectively. Students may be awarded the Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) if they achieve 120 credits and a Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert) if they achieve 60 credits. Students may only progress to the final stage of Masters programmes after meeting the requirements for award of a Postgraduate Diploma.

On successful completion, you should be able to:

  • Demonstrate extensive understanding of relevant established and contemporary knowledge within the subject areas of exercise physiology, biomechanics, sport and exercise psychology, physical activity, nutrition and obesity and research skills.
  • Be able to ethically, accurately and efficiently operate within a laboratory setting. 
  • Be able to plan and conduct appropriate assessment and intervention programmes. 
  • Demonstrate the skills necessary to be a reflective practitioner with a comprehensive understanding of advanced research design, methodology and analysis. 
  • Conduct complex and in-depth research as part of problem-solving with the ability to critically analyse data using quantitative and/or qualitative methods as appropriate, presenting information to both expert and lay recipients.
  • Communicate specialist subject knowledge systematically, effectively and precisely in a variety of formats and contexts.
  • Work independently and use initiative to solve a diverse range of problems you may encounter.
  • Make an original academic contribution to the field of applied sport and exercise science (through your dissertation). 

In a typical teaching week, you will have a minimum of 13 ‘contact’ hours of teaching. This generally breaks down as:

  • Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 7 hours per week.
  • Medium group teaching: 4 hours of skills workshops or seminars each week.
  • Large group teaching: 2 hours of lectures each week.

In addition, you will be expected to undertake a further 20 hours of self-directed study each week eg. working on course assignments.

Career prospects

The current decade has been dubbed the ‘Golden Decade of Sport’, not least because events such as the 2012 Olympic Games and the 2015 Rugby World Cup created thousands of jobs in coaching, fitness, logistics, management and many more.  

The number of jobs in the area of sport and exercise science is increasing due to the diversity of vocations and range of employers in public and private sectors. According to the UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES), overall employment is set to rise steadily with around 1.5 million new jobs across all sectors by 2020.

Our programme provides opportunities for you to develop and demonstrate specialist academic and transferrable skills, such as good communication, problem-solving, critical analysis and the ability to work independently to a high standard.

It has potential to open a variety of sport or fitness-related careers, such as a fitness manager for sports teams, a sport and exercise scientist, performance manager, exercise/physical activity referral officer and exercise physiologist. Alternatively, you may pursue roles in health promotion, the health industry, in research, teaching or working with individuals in the community and health sectors to assist in behaviour change and promote healthy lifestyles. The course's strong focus on research skills provides an ideal platform for further study at PhD level or undertaking research.
