Digital Media BA (Hons)


On this course you will be exploring a range of multimedia forms, practices and platforms in order to create imaginative applications of digital technology. You will learn about how audiences are engaging with digital content and how to develop work for a number of industries including advertising, marketing, publishing, moving-image, multimedia, web, social media and ICT.


From the outset we will develop your technical, creative, reflective and analytical abilities, giving you a thorough grounding in research, software and design skills as well as abilities in project development to equip you for this rapidly expanding sector.

In the first year of your course you will cover the core areas of digital media practice, with modules including: Key Concepts in Media and Communication, Creative Digital Media: Context and Practice, Digital Storytelling and Media Design and our Innovative ‘Creative Hack Lab’ Project.

In year two you will focus on your creative and professional development, including opportunities undertake work and international​ experience. Core modules include Digital Advertising and Marketing, Transmedia Production as well as looking at Digital and Interactive Art. You will also be able to choose from a number of option modules including: Experimental Narrative, Short Film Production and Picturing the Body.

In your final year, you will enhance your research and development skills by working on your own Major Digital Project. Alongside this you will also develop your Professional Practice Portfolio that you will use when looking for work after graduation.

You will also have the opportunity to take part in international trips where you will be able to develop your knowledge and skills through fieldwork and group projects.


Your course will be based on a series of lectures, with associated practical workshops, seminar classes and skills labs. Much of your development will be through activity-led learning, with an emphasis on live projects, industry briefs, real-world working simulations, experimentation and play. In addition, you will have a personal tutor to regularly review and discuss your progress on the course.


An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows:

  • coursework, tests, essays 20%;
  • practical or project work 70%;
  • presentations, posters etc.10%.


In a typical teaching week you will have up to 15 contact hours of study (classroom, online etc.) and this will break down as:

Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 1 hours of tutorials each week;

Medium group teaching: 12 hours of practical classes, workshops or seminars each week;

Large group teaching: 2 hours of lectures each week;

Personal study: 20 plus hours of studying and revising in your own time each week.

Entry Requirements

Essential Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs at grade A*-C including English Language, or specified equivalents.

Typical Offers

A-Levels: BBC preferably to include one from Media, ICT, Computing or Art and Design.

BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma: DMM in Media, Computing or ICT.

Access: A pass in the Access Diploma. Access applicants can meet the GCSE requirements through their current studies and do not need to have these qualifications separately.

International Baccalaureate Diploma: 27 points to include English at Higher level.

As part of the course you will engage in a variety of projects that will require you to undertake short visits and field trips both in the UK and abroad. We select the places on an annual basis. However, recent departmental field trips have included: San Francisco, China, Los Angeles, New York, Norway, Berlin, Moscow and Prague.

Coventry University has strong established links with many international universities and is continuing to develop links with universities throughout the world.

The University offers help both practical and financial through the International Experience and Mobility Service (IEMS) to enable such visits to occur.


To prepare students for the challenges of the global employment market and to strengthen and develop their broader personal and professional skills Coventry University has developed a unique Global Leaders Programme.

The objectives of the programme, in which postgraduate and eligible undergraduate students can participate, is to provide practical career workshops and enable participants to experience different business cultures
