OVERVIEW

Mechanical Engineering is the basis for many engineering disciplines including the automotive, aero, marine and medical sectors. Study in this field can lead to a vast range of employment opportunities and routes for postgraduate study.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

Our Mechanical Engineering course aims to equip you with the skills and capabilities for you to make a significant and early contribution to industry and society and set you on the path to be a Chartered Engineer.

You will be taught in the new Engineering and Computing Faculty building opened in 2012. You will benefit from the University’s advanced facilities, its reputation for teaching excellence in the engineering field, and its strong links with local industry. You will develop an in-depth knowledge of the essential technical subjects, along with the personal skills necessary to progress your career to a leadership role in industry.

The MEng route fully meets the examplifying academic benchmark requirements, for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng). In addition, our BEng route partially meets the examplifying academic benchmark requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng).
  • Experienced teaching staff who bring their professional or research expertise in to their teaching;

    Mechanical Engineering

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

You will acquire essential knowledge and skills in science, commerce, design, manufacturing and management to prepare you for a career across a broad range of industries, with either a major manufacturer, a design consultancy or a supply-chain company.

Your main themes of study will be:

Design: the innovative resolution of design problems focused on commercially viable solutions.

Analysis: the investigation and manipulation of variables and principles that determine the behaviour of products and systems.

Management: the application of principles and practices utilised to assure effective business operation.

Sustainability: an ethical approach to work by protecting the best interests of life and the environment.

Practical: investigation and analysis using laboratory, workshop and computer-based techniques.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

Our courses are based on a series of one or two hour lectures, with associated practice, laboratory and workshop exercises, and tutorials. Our innovative ‘Activity Led Learning’ approach has received national and international acclaim.

You will work with staff on real-world problems from industry, commerce and research groups, as you would in professional practice; this means that you develop all of the professional skills at the same time as you learn the technical content of your degree.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: formal examinations 34%; coursework, tests, essays 40%; practical or project work 10%; group work etc.10%; presentations, posters etc. 6%.

TEACHING CONTACT HOURS

In a typical week you will have up to 20 contact hours of teaching and this will break down as:

Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 1 hour of tutorial (or, later, individual project supervision) each week

Medium group teaching: 7 hours of practical laboratory, workshops or seminars each week

Large group teaching: 12 hours of lectures each week

Personal study: 16-20 hours each week studying and revising in your own time including some guided study using handouts, online activities, etc.

Entry Requirements

Essential Entry Requirements:

5 GCSEs at grade A*-C including English Language and Mathematics, or specified equivalents.

Typical Offers

A-Levels: BBB to include Mathematics and one from Physics, Chemistry, Design Technology, Further Mathematics, Electronics, Computing, ICT or Engineering. Excludes General Studies

BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma: DDM in Engineering

Access: The Access Diploma to include 30 Level 3 credits in Mathematics or Physical Science units. Access applicants can meet the GCSE requirements through their current studies and do not need to have these qualifications separately.

International Baccalaureate Diploma: 29 points to include either Physics, Chemistry, Design Technology, Mathematics or IT at Higher Level

Coventry has a fantastic reputation for engineering and offers a supportive environment to international students. I have an older brother who was already studying at Coventry and had highly recommended it so my expectations were high when I came here. I was not disappointed.

The course is very practical with the first six weeks almost entirely taught by ‘activity-led’ learning. I really enjoyed the hands-on approach, which was very different to any learning I had done before. We learn the theory and then put it into practice.

One of the best things about this course is the opportunity to do a placement and I have interviews arranged with three outstanding companies, one of which is Rolls Royce. I think the right placement will give me vital work experience that can make my CV stand out.
