OVERVIEW

Civil engineers change the world – literally. As a successful graduate of this course, you will help provide essential infrastructure for society and take a leading role in maintaining the quality of our environment.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

Throughout the Civil Engineering course you will study subjects that will give you the necessary skills to analyse, design and manage solutions for innovative and complex engineering problems as a basis for future leadership in the civil engineering profession.

If you choose this course you will benefit from:

  • A course accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE);
  • A course that is accredited as partially satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng), and fully satisfying the educational base for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng). See the JBM website for further information: www.jbm.org.uk
  • Significant opportunities for industrial placements at companies that have previously included: Balfour Beatty Construction, Mott Macdonald, Severn Trent Water, Interserve Project Services, Warwickshire County Council, Atkins and Morgan Sindall;
  • Studying with students on a wide range of courses covering other professional disciplines in an integrated department of architecture, building and civil engineering which reflects the modern interdisciplinary nature of construction projects;
  • A committed group of experienced academics who are active in research and have recent industrial experience, bringing their practical experience into the course to ensure it is current and relevant to the needs of industry;
  • Studying alongside part-time students who are working in the industry, giving you first-hand experience of construction and providing a rich learning experience that reflects the complexities of the construction industry.

       Accreditation

*Accreditations shall be renewed in accordance with the accreditors standard review process and subject to the University maintaining the same high standards of course delivery.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

There are three core course themes which are carefully balanced across all years of the course: specific technical knowledge, construction practice and integrated project work.

Throughout the four years of study you will cover the principles of civil engineering including: engineering analysis, structural analysis and design, highways and surveying, contract and project management, water and ground engineering.

In year four you will study subjects such as: bridge engineering, construction contracts, structural dynamics, project and system management and advanced structural analysis and design.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

Your course will be based on a series of lectures, with associated tutorials, workshops and studio sessions. In addition, you will be assigned a personal tutor who will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.

You will work with staff on real-world problems from industry, commerce and research groups, as you would in professional practice; this means that you develop all of the professional skills at the same time as you learn the technical content of your degree.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: formal examinations 40%; coursework, tests, essays 10%; practical or project work 20%; group work etc.20%; presentations, posters etc. 10%.

Student Profile Adrian Sorica

Most of my lecturers come from industry and the course is very practical. I like the idea of building something from nothing and seeing the end result.
