OVERVIEW

Spanish is a major world language spoken by approximately 450 million people. On this course you will gain knowledge of the political, social, economic and cultural contexts of Spain and Spanish America.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

The Spanish BA Honours degree will provide you with real understanding of modern Spain and the Hispanic world including recent social, political, business and cultural developments. You can study Spanish with English, French, Business, International Relations or TEFL.

If you choose this course you will benefit from:

  • Topics in Spanish culture and society that give you specific applied language skills which will be relevant to the workplace;

  • For students who combine Teaching English as a Foreign Language with Spanish, the opportunity to obtain the certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA), as an integral part of the course. The CELTA is awarded by Cambridge English Language Assessment, part of the University of Cambridge, and is recognised throughout the world as the basic-level qualification for English language teachers;
  • The opportunity to gain valuable work experience by mentoring pupils and shadowing Spanish teachers.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

This course focuses on the four major language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in Spanish. You will also be introduced to Spanish linguistics, translation, Spanish and Spanish American cultures and societies. In addition, the course covers literature, cinema, sociolinguistics, translation, contemporary Spanish culture and society, and the language of business.

In all years you will study different areas of the Spanish language and will apply this to research projects. In this course you will cover topics such as: Spanish Language, Spanish Literature, Spanish Cultural and Social Issues through the Media and Spanish Translation.

Your final year will allow you to strengthen your knowledge of the Spanish language, and complete a dissertation in an area of interest to you.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

Your course will be based on a series of mini-lectures and task-based activities such as translation from and into Spanish, listening and grammar exercises, oral presentations and summary writing from written and audio/visual sources. In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

Assessments on this course include listening comprehensions, translations, summaries, group oral presentations, online grammar tests and reading comprehensions. Some subjects require essay writing, and most are assessed by a combination of coursework and exam (with oral exams for language).

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: formal examinations 35%; coursework, tests, essays 40%; practical or project work 10%; group work etc.5%; presentations, posters etc.10%.

TEACHING CONTACT HOURS

In a typical week you will have up to 16 contact hours of teaching and this could break down as:

Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 3 hours per week to practise conversation with a language assistant as well as tutorials (individual or in small groups) and individual project supervision in your final year

Medium group teaching: 10 hours of workshops, seminars and language classes

Large group teaching: 3 hours of lectures each week

Personal study: 22 hours each week studying and revising in your own time

Entry Requirements

A-Levels: BBC to BCC. Candidates wishing to take the post-A-level language modules must have Spanish at grade C

BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma: DMM

Access: The Access Diploma to include 30 Level 3 credits at Merit. Access applicants can meet the GCSE requirements through their current studies and do not need to have these qualifications separately

International Baccalaureate Diploma: 28 points

Essential Entry Requirements:

GCSEs: 5 GCSEs at grade A*-C including English Language, or specified equivalents. Grade C in a foreign language is required where candidates do not have A2 Spanish

If English is not your first language you will also require: IELTS: 6.0

OPPORTUNITIES FOR AN INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE

The whole course is, by its very nature, an international course. Overseas placements, study abroad and links with international partners are all an essential part of the course. All students are normally required to spend one academic year either working or studying in Spain, or another Spanish-speaking country.

To prepare students for the challenges of the global employment market and to strengthen and develop their broader personal and professional skills Coventry University has developed a unique Global Leaders Programme.
