The rate of exploration and development of the world’s energy resources is increasing rapidly. This course will prepare you for a successful career in the international energy industry, specialising in the oil and gas sector.
This course is designed to teach you about the processes, threats and opportunities that underpin the successful management of the international energy sector in the 21st century. You should also develop the skills required to support a range of exciting careers, from multinational energy companies to consultancies, government ministries and international agencies.If you choose this course you will benefit from:
You will start by exploring the fundamental issues of international energy management including the organisation and operation of the Oil and Gas Sector, Business Economics, Globalisation and the Management of Natural Resources.In the second year you will extend your studies into areas such as risk management, energy futures, health and safety and finance and trading in oil and gas. You will also develop analytical skills needed to undertake quantitative and qualitative investigations.In your final year you will apply your knowledge to examples of managing energy resources in both developed and emerging economies, disaster management and environmental impact assessment. You will also have the chance to specialise in an area of your choice in your project.
Your course will be based on a series of lectures, with associated seminars, fieldwork and practical classes. In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.
An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: formal examinations 25%; coursework 60%; project work 15%.
In a typical week you will have up to 16 contact hours of teaching and this will break down as:Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 4 hours of small group teaching each weekMedium group teaching: 6 hours of practical classes, workshops or seminars each weekLarge group teaching: 6 hours of lectures each weekPersonal study: 20 hours each week studying and revising in your own time

This course is designed to prepare you for a rewarding career in the rapidly growing energy and hydrocarbon industry. The energy sector requires highly skilled technicians and, above all, good managers who understand the diverse issues and challenges it faces.A detailed understanding of the petroleum industry and sustainable energy management, together with specialist skills in disaster management, international economics and health and safety, will help you find employment in national and multinational energy companies, energy and environmental consultancies, government ministries and international and regulatory agencies.In all years of the course, significant opportunities exist for you to enhance your employment prospects. Specialist tutors advise on developing your career skills, giving practical guidance on career opportunities, job applications and interviewing techniques. You will also benefit from visits to organisations such as the Energy Institute, and an annual programme of site visits and ‘experience talks’ in which former graduates (and other professionals currently working in the industry) discuss their careers since leaving university.
