OVERVIEW

The Oil and Gas Management MSc degree course is ideal for those interested in a career (or already working) in the energy and hydrocarbon industry.

The course is designed to equip graduates with the expertise required for leadership and management in the world’s fastest growing and dynamic sectors.

This course is ideal for a person who is interested in a career or already working in the energy and hydrocarbon industry. It will benefit students from a range of technical, non-technical and commercial backgrounds. The course will provide an understanding of the processes, drivers, threats and opportunities related to the management of the energy and hydrocarbon industry in the 21st century. The programme adopts a multidisciplinary approach drawing modules from various specialist areas including petroleum contracts and economics, project management, renewable energy, risk management, environmental management, strategic and human resource management.

On successful completion of the programme, students will in addition to their degree certificate get an IOSH accredited health and safety certificate. A wide range of subjects are available giving you a multidisciplinary approach to the management of the oil and gas industry. There are four established routes in the course, namely:

  • Technology Management Route;
  • Quality, Health, Safety and Environment (QHSE) Route;
  • Law and Policy Route;
  • Finance and Investment Route.

Mandatory subjects for all routes

  • Introduction to Oil and Gas Industry;
  • The Future of Oil and Gas;
  • Health and Safety Executive (HSE) Management in the Oil and Gas Industry;
  • Petroleum Contracts and Economics;
  • Projects/Company Internship.

Optional subjects for the different routes

Technology Management Route

  • Impacts of Petroleum Exploration, Extraction and Transport;
  • Project and Quality Management in the Energy Industry;
  • Environmental and Energy Management;
  • Contaminated Land;
  • Renewable Energy;
  • Water and Wastewater Treatment;
  • Investment Analysis and Decision Making in the Petroleum Industry.

QHSE Route

  • Risk, Safety and Governance;

  • Crisis and Continuity Management;
  • Emergency Management Practices and Issues;

Entry Requirements

A good UK honours degree or an international equivalent, preferably at upper second class level or above. Candidates holding the equivalent of a good second class lower degree may also apply. HND holders with at least five years working experience in the oil and gas industry may also be considered.

Please note: we have a range of taught postgraduate awards to suit your needs, from Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma to a full Master's Degree (MA, MBA, MSc, LLM). In most cases you can decide to exit at Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma level, without carrying onto the full Master's qualification.
